You need a mentor? Here are 5 qualities you need to consider

You need a mentor? Here are 5 qualities you need to consider

Over the past decade or two, the idea of mentoring has become increasingly popular.  Lots of companies now offer mentoring programs, where executive-level professionals support their younger colleagues’ success. Mentoring programs have been created specifically for women, people of color, the disabled, and other groups for whom having a supportive and knowledgeable advisor might be especially helpful. Youth mentoring has evolved as a means to help young people understand how to operate in the grown-up world.
Finding and having a mentor isn’t just a modern fad; it’s a time-honored practice that has served us well for  many thousands of years. And as with most things, there are good mentors and there are not-so-good mentors.  What can you do to make sure you’re getting one of the good ones?   Over the years, as I’ve observed mentoring relationships of various sorts, and have been asked by others to mentor them, I’ve noticed some qualities that seem to distinguish truly good and helpful mentors from those who are indifferent – or even harmful.  Based on that experience, here are five core qualities to look for in a mentor:

I nominated Jonathan as Yar’Adua’s running mate ––E.K Clark

Chief Edwin Clark wants you all to know his contributions to Pres. Goodluck Jonathan's emergence:

How did you take the unanimous decision of the NEC of the Peoples Democratic Party to endorse President Jonathan as the sole candidate for the next presidential election?Oh! Fantastic. In fact, you must have seen our congratulatory message, message of thanks to members of BoT, members of the National Working Committee, NWC, members of NEC, the Governors Forum for thinking it wise enough that a sitting president should be allowed to contest again undisturbed which is the practice in America and all over the world. We did it with Shagari. It is not a novelty. In 1979, Shagari contested. In 1983, there were many men of timber and caliber from all over the country but nobody contested it with him. So, I think this is the right step. So, I congratulate the members of the various organs of the party.

In a recent interview with Yes! magazine, actress Foluke Daramola-Salako spoke on her failed marriage and plans to one day go into politics
"First and foremost, I rushed into my first marriage because everybody was getting married and I also wanted to get married. So I really did not know who I was getting married to the first time. That was the issue. The bane was that I was in a hurry to get married and because I was in a hurry to get married, I did not really study the person I got married to. But just because I had kids in that marriage, I don't regret it because for everything that happens to us in life, it has been orchestrated by God. So, the only thing that I think was the bane of the relationship was that I was immature and I jumped into the marriage and never took my time" she said

New International Money Transfer Initiative excites Forex users

The introduction of the Outbound Money Transfer service by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)last month will not only reduce pressure from the foreign exchange market but will also save independent forex users from the hazzles associated with official and parallel foreign exchange market transactions, reports Festus Akanbi
I  spite of the various interventions of the Central Bank of Nigeria at the various levels of the foreign exchange market for a very long time, the reality is that the naira has continue to be at the mercy of foreign exchange traders.
A closer examination of the trends in the forex market clearly showed that the pressure predated the tenure of the current Governor of the CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who stepped into the saddle in June.
These days, the movement of the naira exchange rates is also dependent on factors, which include CBN’s interventions at the the Retail Dutch Auction System (RDAS), dollar sale by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and to some extent, remittances from abroad.

NEW YORK, September 29, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Remarks of Mr. Elhadj As Sy
Secretary General
International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC)
Ebola came to Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia and there it found us: the IFRC with 25,000 Red Cross volunteers on the ground, 3 National Societies, backed up by a Movement of 189 National Societies and 17 million volunteers across the world and the International Committee for the Red Cross.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent has been there from the beginning. We mobilized and trained a pool of 5,000 volunteers and sent 137 international staff to do what we initially thought would be our routine work: build a field hospital, help with contact tracing and reach out to communities with information.
But very quickly, reality caught up with us, and our humanity has been called upon to suddenly face the high number of our fellow human beings who have been dying, as the statistics are showing, and who deserve all our care, respect and dignity.

Emerging realities support CBN’s stance on MPR – Analysts

Last week, financial analysts who x-rayed the outcome of the last Monetary Policy Committee meeting, argued, that the desire of the Nigerian business community for more accommodating interest rate policy may wait until all the inherent risks in the financial system are fully addressed as they endorsed the retention of a high monetary policy rate, reports Festus Akanbi
One week after the last meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the decision to leave the benchmark interest rate unchanged at a record high has continued to generate reactions from economic affairs commentators in the face of rising risks to the economy.
After exhaustive deliberations, the committee decided to retain the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 12 per cent with a corridor of +/-200 basis points around the midpoint;
It retained the public sector cash reserve requirement at 75.0 per cent; and retained the private sector Cash Reserve Requirement at 15.0 per cent.
Financial analysts said the decision of the committee to maintain the status quo in spite of protests by the real sector operators, whose access to credit facility are being blocked by the regime of high interest rates, came as a shock.

Five amazing things your brain does while you sleep

Turns out our brains are doing some very important work while we’re sleeping.
We know that sleep makes us feel more energised and improves our mood, but what’s really happening in the brain and body when we’re at rest?
Research has identified a number of reasons that sleep is critical to our health. When we’re sleeping, the brain is anything but inactive. In fact, during sleep, neurons in the brain fire nearly as much as they do during waking hours — so it should come as no surprise that what happens during our resting hours is extremely important to a number brain and cognitive functions.
Here are five incredible things your brain does while you’re asleep — and good reason to get some shut-eye tonight:

Housing prices stall in Sept: RP Data

A DAILY home value index for mainland state capitals compiled by RP Data and CoreLogic was down 0.3 per cent in the first 26 days of September, compared with the average for all of August.
But the trend picked up late in the month, making a "relatively flat" result likely for the month as whole, RP Data research director Tim Lawless said. "The first month of spring has seen housing market conditions remain buoyant with clearance rates consistently above the 70 per cent mark on a weighted capital city basis and agents continuing to report strong housing market activity," he said. "From a valuations perspective we have seen a flattening in the rate of capital gains over the month of September." The September result would bring the three-monthly growth rate for prices back to about 2.5 per cent, a "healthy reduction" from growth of 4.2 per cent over the three months to August, Mr Lawless said. "With the debate around sustainability of dwelling values heating up, the softer September result should be viewed as a welcome evolution in the housing market, although it remains to be seen whether these softer conditions will persist throughout the rest of Spring." The final figures for September, which will include data for smaller capitals and regional areas, are due for release on Wednesday.

Cervical cancer check 'delays' revealed

A generic image of a male and female
YOUNG women with cervical cancer "frequently" delay seeking help from their doctors, experts have said.
WHEN women notice symptoms, including abdominal pain, abnormal bleeding or discharge, they may not seek help from their GP because they do not recognise their symptoms could be something more sinister.
They may be embarrassed, worried about wasting a doctor's time or be anxious that they can not see a female GP, experts said. If they were to get better help sooner then there may be better outcomes for this group of women, they added. Researchers from Queen Mary University of London interviewed 128 patients under the age of 30 who had recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer. Just under a third had sought help after noticing symptoms and of these 28 per cent delayed going to see a doctor for more than three months after noticing a change to their bodies, according to the study published in the British Journal of General Practice. Patient delay was more common among women under the age of 25 than older women, they added. "Young females with cervical cancer frequently delay presentation and not recognising symptoms as serious may increase the risk of delay," the researchers wrote

Treasury Wines spurns suitors

Bottles of Wolf Blass wine by Treasury Wine Estates
AUSTRALIA'S largest winemaker, Treasury Wine Estates, has rejected takeover proposals from two global private equity firms, prompting a sharp fall in the company's share price.
TREASURY, which owns Penfolds, Wolf Blass and a host of other prominent labels, had been in talks with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and a rival suitor, believed to be TPG.
The two firms each proposed paying $5.20 a share, valuing Treasury at almost $3.4 billion. But after talking with its major shareholders about the proposals while the two suitors appraised Treasury's business, the winemaker decided to knock them back. Most of Treasury's major shareholders believed the proposed offers were simply too low. Treasury chief executive Michael Clarke said that after two months of talks with the suitors, it became apparent that they were unable to address potential regulatory concerns in the US or finalise an acceptable financing structure.

Jason Derulo denies cheating on Jording Sparks

Last week, Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks ended their engagement after three years together and there were rumours that it was because he cheated. Well, Jason denies they split over cheating…

In a statement to the media Jason explains,
"Though I think it is a private matter and intended to keep my break-up with Jordin personal, due to bogus and irresponsible lies being reported by insensitive media outlets it became necessary for me to comment. I spent three great years with Jordin and she is one of the most amazing people that I have ever met. But as in all relationships there are ups and downs and at this time we have decided to amicably part. Infidelity, cheating or deceit played no part in our relationship or our break-up, and I hope that people respect our privacy as we move forward with our lives."

A Food Guide for Pregnant Women

pregnant mom drinking waterDuring your pregnancy there are a few things that might stress you out, but eating shouldn't be one of them. Unfortunately, all of the advice you hear -- from friends, family, and yes, even total strangers -- about what is and isn't safe during pregnancy is enough to confuse anyone. "There are a lot of old wives' tales out there," says Elizabeth Ward, RD, of Reading, Massachusetts. So if you're wondering what's okay to eat (and whether you have to give your favorite foods the boot for nine months), check out our guide.

Foods to Avoid

Why are some foods off-limits when you're pregnant -- but fine if you're not? First, changes to your immune system now make you more vulnerable to food-borne illnesses. What would've meant stomach upset before could mean serious complications now -- from dehydration to miscarriage.
So to be safe, avoid the common culprits of food-borne illness:
Eggs: Because raw eggs may be tainted with salmonella, a bacterium that can cause fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, watch out for restaurant-made Caesar salad dressing, homemade eggnog, raw cookie dough, and soft scrambled or sunny-side up eggs -- any dish in which the eggs (both yolk and white) are not cooked completely. "If eggs are cooked, the risk is gone," adds Madeleine Sigman-Grant, PhD, maternal child health and nutrition extension specialist at the University of Nevada.

The hackers got Nicki Minaj too, releases her nude pics

It was only a matter of time before they got the queen of semi-nudity. Yesterday iCloud hackers released topless photos of Nicki Minaj, British model Cara Delevingne and Hollywood actress Anna Kendrick...amongst others.

The photos, which purport to be Nicki Minaj topless, doesn't show her face, but in one particular pic there's 'liquid' on the breast of the woman who has the exact same tattoo on her arm that Nicki has. The pics are floating online...but of course I can't post them here without censoring them. If you want to see uncensored pics, try Google. The pic I have after the cut, I cropped her boobs out but you will still see the 'liquid' on the boobs. Continue to see it but please don't open in a public place...:-)
